2018-11-23【VCAF Seminar Invitation】- Financial crisis, Brexit, the future of European banks

When financial historians look back at the past, two seismic shocks catch their eyes particularly. One is the Great Depression, the other the global financial crisis of 2008. While the latter reached its peak ten years ago with the collapse of very large banks, there are increasing concerns about the source and timing of the next crisis and recession in Europe, although the financial system today seems stronger than it was then.

Just as the causes of the financial crisis were many and various, so were its consequences: a deep recession, high unemployment and stagnating wages, zero and negative interest rates, extraordinary asset purchases by central banks and toxic politics. The sky did not come down ten years ago, but lessons must be learned. The question is: what have we learned from the financial crisis of 2008?

Concerning the banking system: Has it become healthier and more resilient to weather the next crisis? Or have banks just transferred their risks to other parts of the financial system? Should European governments support the creation of giant and more competitive banks, regardless of the “too big to fail” moral hazard?

Another disturber is Brexit, which one might describe as “unleashing demons which we do not know yet”. Although it will take place in less than half a year, the concrete outcome is yet unclear. Will it be a soft or hard Brexit, or even a no-deal in the end? How will it reshape the financial industry in Europe? Could it challenge London’s current role as a global financial center? How could Frankfurt as the financial hub in continental Europe benefit from the UK leaving?

We will explore all these questions in the following VCAF seminar with Mr. Schildbach from Deutsche Bank Research and Prof. Dr. Werner from the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Please register for the event and join us on 23.11.2018!
